17 Fanboy Movies You Must See Before Watching 'Ready Player One'
If you love pop culture references, "Steven Spielberg film features iconic characters and objects from all sorts of beloved Hollywood favorites, including some from Spielbergo's IMDB. If you want to make sure you can spot them all, make sure you watch every movie on this list.
'King Kong' (1933)
Everyone's favorite giant ape can be seen swinging through the buildings of a digital New York City in the trailers. And if that's not reason enough to watch "King Kong," consider also that it's a beloved classic with a surprisingly modest run time.
'2001: A Space Odyssey' (1968)
This Stanley Kubrick classic may be one of the most parodied films of all time. "Ready Player One" is hardly the first movie to lampoon the iconic stargate sequence at the end of the film. In this case, that sequence inspires the transition effect that happens whenever the stars of "Ready Player One" plug into OASIS and enter the digital realm.

The titular hero of this beloved animated film looks to be a major player in "Ready Player One." The Giant can be seen at several points in the trailer, stomping his way through a pop culture-infested battlefield.
The 'Lord of the Rings' Trilogy (2001-03)
Gandalf the Grey is among many pop culture icons assembled for "Ready Player One's" epic battle sequence. But that's not the only reason to re-watch these fantasy epics beforehand. There are a number of parallels between Wade's quest to unlock the secrets of OASIS and Frodo's quest to destroy the One Ring.
'Tron: Legacy' (2010)
Tron is enough of a visual influence on "Tron" light cycles seem like obvious inclusions for the big race sequence, but that depends on whether Disney is willing to in on the crossover fun.
